Painting sailing regattas on location

I have missed the activity of the Solent since I re-located to Whitby, but I am starting to carve a niche as a plein air regatta painter in the north! I attended the Dart 18 world championships in Bridlington, and painted in true Hilary style during the regatta in the bay, over a variety of weather conditions. I sold the work in the regatta marquee at the end of each day and by the end of the week they were selling as quickly as I pinned them up to display. After rather a difficult time during covid it was great to have my talents appreciated again.
Its hard work by the way! I was camping in a muddy field for a start! I prepare my paper in advance of the day (much to the bemusement of fellow campers) I have all my paints and equipment ready in my trusty ruck sack. I have a variety of clothing as the wind and rain are my enemies for success (although I love the rough seas that strong winds bring!) .In new locations I have to work out viewpoints, access, parking opportunities. These days I have a few back issues so sitting in my car is often my chosen location, or at least nearby with a chair. I followed the practise race and also sketched some of the more unusual hull colours, sail combinations. The 'darts' were often far away, but I love to capture the activity when launching and returning to the beach. However on the last day I tried something I had not done before and that was using my binoculars to paint the start - it turned out to be a popular piece!
So I am back to my old hunting ground, Cowes week this year and also hope to get to the Dart Worlds in Italy if I can find some reasonable accommodation!
